CODE OF PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
Back Forward

CRCC has adopted a Code of Professional Ethics for its Certified Rehabilitation Counselors and Canadian Certified Rehabilitation Counselors.

The standards of this mandatory code are intended to assure the community that the rehabilitation counseling profession accepts its responsibility to provide caring service to persons with disabilities. The Guidelines and Procedures for Complaints is the process to be used by individuals to file a complaint against certified rehabilitation counselors who they perceive have violated the code of ethics. All complaints are reviewed by the CRCC Ethics Committee.

CRCC's Ethics Committee completed a survey regarding ethical dilemmas that CRCs had recently experienced or project to experience in the near future and which resources, including the Code of Professional Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors, were used in resolving those issues. A content analysis of the data was performed and will assist CRCC in updating the Code. A summary of the analysis is available in the Executive Summary below.

CRCC's Ethics Committee completed a survey on the professional disclosure practices of CRCs. While most support the need for professional disclosure, there is great disparity in the content and manner in which information is conveyed. CRCC recommends the use of written professional disclosure and release statements and offers the following sample forms. The forms will require review for applicability and modifications must be made as appropriate. Revisions for releases may be required based on various laws or based on HIPAA requirements for transfer of medical records.

CRCC's Ethics Committee routinely responds to requests for advisory opinions related to application of CRCC's Code of Professional Ethics. Available for review is a compilation of the essence of the questions presented dating back to 1996, as well as the Committee’s response and Code citations. An index allows individuals to review all opinions relating to a particular Standard of the Code; however, in some instances, one may find that there have been no inquiries related to a particular Standard.
