CRC Exam Eligibility Category R - An Opportunity for Universities and Students

Category R expands certification eligibility through attainment of a post-graduate advanced certificate or degree in lieu of a second Master's degree in Counseling or Rehabilitation Counseling. Thus, it allows universities with CORE-accredited rehabilitation counselor education programs to prepare more students for CRC certification through the creation of a post-graduate certificate or degree program that incorporates coursework as required within Category R.  Complete details on Category R can be found on pages 9-10  of the CRC Certification Guide.

CRCC welcomes the opportunity to consult with universities during the process to ensure advanced certificate and degree programs meet CRC eligibility requirements and to assist in communicating certification benefits to student populations. For questions or assistance, please contact CRCC at info@crccertification.com.

For more information on Eligibility Criteria, go to Category R in Eligibility Requirements.

Category J Eligibility Available for Educators

Educators in a Rehabilitation Counselor Education Program interested in sitting for the CRC Exam may be eligible under Category J.

For more information on Eligibility Criteria, go to Category J in Eligibility Requirements.

The Importance of the CRC Credential

The primary purpose of a credentialing process is to ensure that professionals meet acceptable standards of practice in order to serve their clients’ best interests. Accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) credential is the premier credential for rehabilitation counselors.

For students and graduates, the CRC credential:

  • Establishes a professional identity.
  • Provides a marketable credential that sets them apart from other counseling professionals.
  • Demonstrates the attainment of key competency standards.
  • Enhances consumer protection through required adherence to the Code of Professional Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to an ongoing upgrading of skills.

The Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) works directly with many colleges and universities to provide timely access to the CRC Exam. In 2010, approximately 800 students from over 94 colleges and universities completed the CRC Exam (up from 500 students in 2007). Attaining the CRC credential is the best way to start a promising career in rehabilitation counseling.

The CRC Credential

The CRC is the premier credential among rehabilitation counselors.  Accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the CRC Certification Program ensures certificants are of good moral character, meet nationally accepted standards of quality in their practice, and have the requisite educational and professional background.  As such, the CRC credential enhances job and career advancement opportunities for the certified individual.
