Eligibility Requirements

The CRC Certification Guide contains important information including eligibility criteria, application deadline dates, testing dates, and fees. An overview of eligibility categories and key criteria appears below, however, applicants must use the CRC Certification Guide to confirm the appropriate category under which they should apply and completion of all eligibility requirements.

Category A:

Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling – program accredited by CORE.
  • Rehabilitation counseling internship of 600 clock hours supervised by a CRC.

Category B:

Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling – program NOT accredited by CORE.
  • Rehabilitation counseling internship of 600 clock hours supervised by a CRC PLUS twelve months of acceptable employment experience supervised by a CRC.*
OR
  • Twenty-four months of acceptable employment experience including twelve months supervised by a CRC.*

Category D:

Master’s in Counseling that includes one graduate-level course on Theories and Techniques of Counseling - college or university accredited by CHEA.
  • Four specific graduate courses (ONE EACH on Assessment; Occupational Information or Job Placement; Medical or Psychosocial and Cultural Aspects of Disabilities, and; Community Resources or Delivery of Rehabilitation Services) PLUS thirty-six months of acceptable employment experience including twelve months supervised by a CRC.*
OR
  • ONE graduate course on Medical or Psychosocial and Cultural Aspects of Disabilities PLUS ONE course on either Assessment, Occupational Information or Job Placement, or Community Resources or Delivery of Rehabilitation Services PLUS forty-eight months of acceptable employment experience including twelve months supervised by a CRC.*
OR
  • ONE graduate course on Medical or Psychosocial and Cultural Aspects of Disabilities PLUS sixty months of acceptable employment experience including twelve months supervised by a CRC.*

Category E:

Doctorate in Counseling or Rehabilitation Counseling that includes one graduate-level course on Theories and Techniques of Counseling from a college or university accredited by CHEA - PLUS ONE graduate-level course on Medical or Psychosocial and Cultural Aspects of Disabilities.
  • Rehabilitation counseling internship of 600 clock hours at the doctoral level supervised by a CRC.
OR
  • Twelve months of acceptable employment experience supervised by a CRC* PLUS ONE graduate-level course on Medical or Psychosocial and Cultural Aspects of Disabilities.

Category G:

Students enrolled in Master’s degree program accredited by CORE with 75% of coursework completed by February 1 for March test; by June 1 for July test; by September 1 for October test.

  • Rehabilitation counseling internship of 600 clock hours supervised by a CRC completed prior to graduation.
  • Graduate within twelve months of the CRC application deadline date.

Category J:

Master's or Doctorate in Counseling or Rehabilitation Counseling that includes one graduate-level course on Theories and Techniques of Counseling from a college or university accredited by CHEA - PLUS ONE graduate-level course on Medical or Psychosocial and Cultural Aspects of Disabilities.

  • 36 months of full-time employment in a rehabilitation counselor education program, subsequent to earning the master's or doctoral degree. 
  • Supervision of a student and/or direct clinical work with a population of individuals with disabilities as defined by CRCC.

Category K:

Former CRCs wishing to restore expired certification status. Master’s degree in counseling that includes one graduate-level course on Theories and Techniques of Counseling – college or university accredited by CHEA.

  • One graduate-level course on Medical or Psychosocial and Cultural Aspects of Disabilities.
  • Verification of most recent employment experience in rehabilitation counseling.

 

Category R:

Master's, Specialist, or Doctoral degree in one of thirteen qualifying majors (listed below) granted by a college or university accredited by CHEA - PLUS a post-graduate advanced certificate or degree that includes a minimum of 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours granted by a college or university that also offers a CORE-accredited Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.   View or Print Category R - University List

  • SIX graduate courses (ONE EACH on Theories and Techniques of Counseling; Foundations of Rehabilitation Counseling; Assessment; Occupational Information or Job Placement; Medical or Psychosocial and Cultural Aspects of Disabilities, and; Community Resources or Delivery of Rehabilitation Services.)
  • Thirty-six months of acceptable work experience including twenty-four months supervised by a CRC.*
