The CRC Certification Guide contains important information including eligibility criteria, application deadline dates, testing dates, and fees. An overview of eligibility categories and key criteria appears below, however, applicants must use the CRC Certification Guide to confirm the appropriate category under which they should apply and completion of all eligibility requirements.

Category A

Masterís in Rehabilitation Counselor Education (RCE) or Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling (CLRC) program accredited by CORE - PLUS rehabilitation counseling internship of 600 clock hours supervised by a CRC.


Category B

Masterís in Rehabilitation Counseling Ė program NOT accredited by CORE - PLUS:

OPTION 1
  • Rehabilitation counseling internship of 600 clock hours supervised by a CRC PLUS twelve months of acceptable employment experience supervised by a CRC.*

OPTION 2
  • Twenty-four (24) months of acceptable employment experience including twelve months supervised by a CRC.*


Category D

Masterís in Counseling that includes ONE integrated OR TWO separate graduate courses with the primary focus on Theories of Counseling AND Techniques of Counseling - college or university accredited by a national or regional accrediting body accredited by CHEA - PLUS:

D1
  • TWO or THREE graduate courses with the individual or combined primary focus on 1) Medical Aspects of Disabilities; 2) Psychosocial  Aspects of Disabilities; AND 3) Multicultural Issues.
  • THREE graduate courses on Assessment, Occupational Information or Job Placement, and Case Management and Rehabilitation Services.
  • Thirty-six (36) months of acceptable employment experience including twelve (12) months supervised by a CRC.*

D2
  • TWO or THREE graduate courses with the individual or combined primary focus on 1) Medical Aspects of Disabilities; 2) Psychosocial  Aspects of Disabilities; AND 3) Multicultural Issues.
  • ONE graduate course on either Assessment, Occupational Information or Job Placement, or Case Management and Rehabilitation Services.
  • Forty-eight (48) months of acceptable employment experience including twelve (12) months supervised by a CRC.*

D3
  • TWO or THREE graduate courses with the individual or combined primary focus on 1) Medical Aspects of Disabilities; 2) Psychosocial  Aspects of Disabilities; and 3) Multicultural Issues.
  • Sixty (60) months of acceptable employment experience including twelve (12) months supervised by a CRC.*


Category E

Doctorate in Counseling or Rehabilitation Counseling.  Doctoral or master's transcript in counseling or rehabilitation counseling must reflect that ONE integrated OR TWO separate graduate courses with the primary focus on Theories of Counseling AND Techniques of Counseling - college or university accredited by a national or regional accrediting body accredited by CHEA Ė PLUS:

OPTION 1
  • TWO or THREE graduate courses with the individual or combined primary focus on 1) Medical Aspects of Disabilities; 2) Psychosocial  Aspects of Disabilities; AND 3) Multicultural Issues
  • Rehabilitation counseling internship of 600 clock hours at the doctoral level supervised by a CRC.

OPTION 2
  • TWO or THREE graduate courses with the individual or combined primary focus on 1) Medical Aspects of Disabilities; 2) Psychosocial  Aspects of Disabilities; AND 3) Multicultural Issues
  • Twelve (12) months of acceptable employment experience supervised by a CRC.*

Category G:

Students enrolled in Masterís in Rehabilitation Counselor Education (RCE) or Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling (CLRC) program accredited by CORE with 75% of coursework completed by February 1st for March test; by June 1st for July test; by September 1st for October test.

  • Rehabilitation counseling internship of 600 clock hours supervised by a CRC completed prior to graduation.
  • Graduate within twelve (12) months of the CRC application deadline date.


Category J

Master's or Doctorate in Counseling or Rehabilitation Counseling that includes ONE integrated OR TWO separate graduate courses with the primary focus on Theories of Counseling AND Techniques of Counseling - college or university accredited by a national or regional accrediting body accredited by CHEA - PLUS:

  • Have taken TWO or THREE graduate courses with the individual or combined primary focus on 1) Medical Aspects of Disabilities; 2) Psychosocial  Aspects of Disabilities; AND 3) Multicultural Issues OR have taught the courses within a rehabilitation counselor education program.
  • Thirty-six (36) months of full-time employment in a rehabilitation counselor education program, subsequent to earning the master's or doctoral degree. 
  • Supervision of a student and/or direct clinical work with a population of individuals with disabilities as defined by CRCC.



Category K  (former CRCs wishing to restore expired certification status)

Masterís in Counseling that includes ONE integrated OR TWO separate graduate courses with the primary focus on Theories of Counseling AND Techniques of Counseling PLUS:

  • TWO or THREE graduate courses with the individual or combined primary focus on 1) Medical Aspects of Disabilities; 2) Psychosocial  Aspects of Disabilities; AND 3) Multicultural Issues.
  • Verification of most recent employment experience in rehabilitation counseling.



Category R

Master's, Specialist, or Doctoral degree in one of thirteen (13) qualifying majors (listed below) granted by a college or university accredited by a national or regional accrediting body accredited by CHEA.
  • Post-graduate advanced certificate or degree that includes a minimum of 21 semester hours or 31.5 quarter hours granted by a college or university that also offers a CORE-accredited Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.
  • Minimum of SEVEN graduate courses  -

-  ONE integrated OR TWO separate graduate courses with the primary focus on Theories of Counseling AND Techniques of Counseling;

-  ONE on Foundations of Rehabilitation Counseling;

-  ONE on Assessment;

-  ONE on Occupational Information or Job Placement;

-  TWO or THREE with the individual or combined primary focus on 1) Medical Aspects of Disabilities; 2) Psychosocial  Aspects of Disabilities; AND 3) Multicultural Issues, and;

-  ONE on Case Management and Rehabilitation Services.
  • Thirty-six (36) months of acceptable work experience including twenty-four (24) months supervised by a CRC.*
