Steve is Professor and Chair of the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology & Research at the University of Memphis. He specializes in addictions issues and access to healthcare among persons with disabilities. Along with colleagues at Virginia Commonwealth University, Steve pioneered work to demonstrate that access barriers are rampant in substance abuse treatment centers and that such barriers directly result in service denials to persons with disabilities. He has published produced more than fifty peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, monographs, and editorials on these and related topics. He has been involved in rehabilitation counseling for more than twenty years. Steve trained as a rehabilitation counselor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and completed his doctoral studies at Texas Tech University. Steve received the Young Investigator of the Year Award from the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) in 2005.
